What is Candidiasis?
Candidiasis is an
infection caused by any one or more of the strains of candida
fungus, but especially that of candida albicans. This overgrowth
of yeast in the human body is known by many names. The following is
a list of the more commonly known names:
- Candida
- Candida albicans
- Candida Related Complex
- Systemic candidiasis
- Candidiasis Hypersensitivity
Syndrome
- Oral Thrush, Vaginal Thrush
- Moniliasis
- Polysystemic
candidiasis
This fungus is often found in areas
of the body that are moist and/or humid, such as in the intestines,
vagina, or areas of mucous membranes such as the mouth or on damp
skin. This infection is also commonly called and/or known as Thrush
or Moniliasis. Thrush is a fungal infection, typically
concentrated in the area of the mouth or vagina.
Moniliasis is an infection caused by fungi of
the genus Monilia Candida Albicans is the
specific name for a strain of normally peaceful, yeast-like fungus
that naturally exist in limited amounts inside our digestive tract;
which extends end-to-end from our mouth to our rectum. Ideally,
Candida Albicans are a harmless parasite that manifests in small
colonies while coexisting with beneficial microbes or bacteria. The
presence of yeast in a controlled balance does not cause any
problems. Its primary function is to recognize and destroy harmful
bacteria that invade our body. In a thriving individual, millions to
perhaps billions of Candida Albicans may exist; to be kept in check
by a properly functioning immune system and an equally balanced and
harmonious collection of friendly (floral) bacteria. However, if the
number of harmonious bacteria is decreased, the immune system is
weakened and other conditions that enable yeast proliferation can
occur. Consequently Candida Albicans will shift from yeast
to a mycelial, tenacious form (branch like) and begin invading the
entire body. This phenomenon is called Candidiasis. Perhaps
the most difficult is that Candida Albicans is a pleomorphic fungi,
meaning that it has the ability to change its form to survive. Just
as bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics, yeast can become
resistant to antifungals.
Candidiasis is the condition that
develops from an overgrowth of Candida Albicans. It has been
reported that everybody has a certain normal level of this
fungus, typically found in the digestive system (intestines). A
healthy level of candida albicans is kept in check by friendly
floral bacteria in the intestines, such as Lactobacillus
sporogenes, bacillus subtills or streptococcus faecalis
What Causes
Candidiasis?
Most
infections of the mucous membranes in the area affected by
candidiasis are common in people who have a normal immune
system. This is because its growth is controlled by the natural
bacteria that is present in some organs. When an antibiotic
treatment destroys too many of the bacteria or in cases where the
bodies resistance is lowered this fungus can multiply and grow.
Thus, it tends to be much more common or persistent in those with
diabetes, pregnant women due to the hormonal changes that occur
during pregnancy, women taking birth control pills and those with
AIDS. However, anyone that has a history of taking broad-spectrum
antibiotics (tetracyclines such as SumycinŽ, PanmycinŽ, VibramycinŽ,
MinocinŽ, or other such antibiotics for acne, respiratory, urinary
or other infections) for a month or longer, or for shorter periods
four (4) or more times within a one-year span, are typically very
vulnerable to candida overgrowth. Individuals that have also taken
prednisone, DecadronŽ, or other such cortisone-type drugs orally are
also susceptible. There are many other reasons that account for an
overgrowth of candida, and as each day passes, the medical community
is learning more about this very subject.
Do you
think you may have Candidiasis?
It is understood that Candida symptoms vary from
person to person, and fluctuate in severity. While some symptoms
come and go, others may last a long time, either visible (such as
skin rashes or abdominal bloating), or invisible (such as joint
pain, lethargy).

Horrific Problems of
Candida
Candida is the most dangerous of all the germs that can take
over your intestinal tract after weak immune system and bad eating
habits and after being treated with Antibiotics,Cipro or
doxycycline.
Candida is yeast. It is a member of the
vegetable family. It is a cousin to "molds". Yeasts are among the
oldest living life forms on earth. They are a single celled life
form containing no chlorophyll. There are many different types of
yeast. Yeasts are common on plant leaves and flowers, on the
surfaces of skin and the intestinal tract of animals. The type of
yeast that we use to make bread or brew alcoholic beverages is
different then Candida. These are thought as food yeasts. Candida is
not a food yeast. It is not allowed to be used in the making bread
or beer etc. Candida is thought of as pathogenic yeast. Pathogenic
means that it can cause disease.
Candida is referred to as
"dimorphic", which means it can exist or live in 2 different states
or forms. As"yeast" it is a single cell plant life. It has a large,
round, thick spore that is shaped like a chicken egg. It is asexual,
which means it does not need a mate to reproduce. It reproduces by
"budding" or growing buds. Do you recall seeing buds forming on the
branches of trees or plants? Candida looks similar. As it grows it
resembles a bunch of grapes. As it spreads it grows more branches,
which then "buds" more bunches of "grapes". This is the way Candida
appears in its other form or state, which is "fungal". Here it looks
like lots of little beads strung together by threads. Just like
there are safe yeasts, there are safe fungus. Mushrooms are an
example of a fungus, which does not produce disease. Eating
mushrooms will not cause candida.
Candida eats sugars and
some fats that way animals do. This is how it feeds. Candida loves
the dark, warm and moist environment of the intestines. It attaches
itself to the intestinal wall and when it is in the fungal form
tries to bury itself deep into your intestinal lining. It grows
roots (like a weed) digging into the lining of your intestinal tract
looking for food. When it does this it produces infections and
illness in your body.
It can get so deep that it is able to
break into your blood stream. It rarely can grow in all its budding
glory in your blood. This only happens to very ill (usually
terminally ill) people. If it breaks through to your blood tiny
amounts of it as "spores" ride the waves of the blood stream and
eventually "come ashore" onto a gland, organ or tissue. Here it can
reproduce and "bud" invading this tissue and causing disease. This
becomes a fungal infection in the tissue.

When you are using
ThreeLac, it is a good idea to continue to test yourself. You will
start to see fewer and fewer strings hanging
down
Try this simple test to see if
you have candida. First thing in the morning, before you put
ANYTHING in your mouth, get a clear glass. Fill with water and work
up a bit of saliva, then spit it into the glass of water. Check the
water every 15 minutes or so for up to one hour. If you have a
candida yeast infection, you will see strings (like legs) traveling
down into the water from the saliva floating on the top, or "cloudy"
saliva will sink to the bottom of the glass, or cloudy specks will
seem to be suspended in the water. If there are no strings and the
saliva is still floating after at least one hour, you are probably
candida yeast free.
Candida Can Cause Many Negative Symptoms That Can Be
Misdiagnosed
Back in your intestines candida will eat sugars and
starches. It will ferment them creating alcohol. In some cases it
can create enough alcohol to negatively effect you by causing mild
symptoms of intoxication or hangover chronically.
In the
digestive tract it causes gas to be produced as a byproduct of
fermentation. As it grows in the intestinal tract it takes over
sections that do not have friendly bacteria. Because of this it
grows in only certain areas of the intestines. If you could take out
the intestines and open them up Candida would look like streaks or
blotches appearing very unevenly in certain areas while other areas
would be normal.
Candida needs food to grow just like
parasites do. The more food Candida has, the more it can grow. In
tends to grow like a weed in your intestines. When it has food it
perks up and spreads. Your own immune system can inhibit its growth
it most cases. But when enough friendly bacteria are killed off by
"Cipro" your immune system will not be able to fight off Candida.
Candida can be seen in the vagina of a woman. It can appear
as a frothy like beer foam or like cottage cheese producing itching
and burning and well as a sweet odor. This is the classic vaginal
yeast infection.
In the mouth, it's overgrowth is called
"thrush". It causes a heavy white coating on the tongue as well as
white spots on the gums, the sides of the mouth or the corners of
the mouth. It can look fuzzy or like cotton and is painful. A green,
yellow or white coating on the tongue may also come from a sinus
infection or allergy and that may involve Candida.
Candida
can invade the sinuses, the ears, and the creases of the skin where
we sweat and cause chronic infections that continue to return
despite treatment. It can invade the scalp and cause dandruff.
When this happens the scalp will get particularly itchy and
may itch when you eat sweets. Dry flaky scalp may mean Candida is
causing B vitamin deficiencies.
The
Disease of Intestinal Flora
Deficiency
The gastrointestinal tract refers to the small
intestine, the section of 30-40 feet of tubing that the stomach
empties into and the colon or large intestine, a wider 4-6 feet of
tubing that connects to the end of the small intestines and the
connects to the rectum. From the rectum feces is eliminated from the
body. The intestinal tract has 2 other small pipelines connected to
it. One is from the gall bladder. The gall bladder releases a fluid
called bile into the intestines to help with the digestion of fats.
The pancreas also has a pipeline that releases a fluid called
pancreatin into the intestines. This fluid contains enzymes that
help digest all foods.
The intestines also contain several
pounds of bacteria. Not all this bacteria is disease producing. Most
of it is friendly and beneficial to us. There are 3 friendly
organisms 3 that are most abundant. Acidophilus, Bifidus and E coil.
The E coil bacteria found there is not a harmful one and belongs
there. The other 2 are Acidophilus and Bifidus. These bacteria are
available in food such as yogurt, buttermilk, miso, kefir and some
other fermented products. Bifidus bacteria are found in mother's
milk. It is the dominant bacteria in our intestinal tract during
infancy. At some point as a child gets older, Acidophilus begins to
grow.
Bifidus remains the principle bacteria in our colon
while acidophilus is the principle one in the vaginal area and small
intestine. Both bifidus and acidophilus create healthy acids in the
intestinal tract that many harmful organisms do not like.
There are harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites passing
through the gastrointestinal tract constantly. The friendly
organisms we just discussed repel them and fight them off so they do
not harm us. They help create a surrounding environment that is
hostile these harmful organisms that we think of as our enemies. A
list of them would include they cold and flu virus and many of the
bacteria and parasites that cause food poisoning. These friendly
organisms also help digest our food. They literally start to eat our
food and create chemical changes that make it easier for us to break
the food down further. They also produce small amounts of a few
important B vitamins for us. The make these Vitamins in our
intestines by manufacturing them from left over that they find in
the intestines. Unfortunately Anthrax is an organism that can
overpower these friendly organisms making antibiotic use a must, if
we are to stop it. But, keep in mind that medicines like "Cipro" and
doxycycline kill acidophilus and Bifidus and allow harmful organisms
to take their place!!!!!

Diflucan & Fluconazole Side
Effects
How does it
work?
This medicine contains the active ingredient
fluconazole, which is a type of medicine called a triazole
antifungal. It is used to treat infections with fungi and
yeasts.
Fluconazole works by preventing fungi from
producing a substance called ergosterol, which is a component
of fungal cell membranes. The cell membranes of fungi are
vital for their survival. They keep unwanted substances from
entering the cells and stop the contents of the cells from
leaking out. Without ergosterol as part of the cell membrane,
the membrane is weakened and damaged, and essential
constituents of the fungal cells can leak out. This kills the
fungi.
Fluconazole is used to treat a number of
different types of fungal and yeast infections, particularly
those caused by Candida or Cryptococcus species of
fungi.
Fluconazole can be bought over-the-counter from
pharmacies as a single 150mg dose to treat vaginal thrush
(vaginal candidiasis) and male partners who are also infected
(candidal balanitis). See the 'Fluconazole 150mg capsule'
factsheet for further information.

For
more information about any other possible risks associated
with this medicine, please read the information provided with
the medicine or consult your doctor or pharmacist.
How can this medicine
affect other medicines?
Fluconazole must not be taken with the
following medicines, as it may increase their blood levels,
resulting in a risk of abnormal heart rhythms: -
astemizole - cisapride - terfenadine.
The
antibiotic rifampicin (used for tuberculosis) lowers the blood
level of fluconazole, and your doctor may prescribe you a
larger than normal dose of fluconazole if you need both these
medicines.
Fluconazole may increase blood levels of the
following medicines: - benzodiazepines (sedatives), eg
midazolam (this may cause increased drowsiness, and people
taking both medicines may need a lower dose of
benzodiazepine) - ciclosporin (monitoring of ciclosporin
blood levels is recommended) - phenytoin (phenytoin blood
levels should be monitored if you need both medicines; your
doctor may need to reduce your phenytoin dose) -
repaglinide - rifabutin - sulphonylureas used for
diabetes, eg glibenclamide, glipizide (this does not usually
affect blood sugar control, but may rarely cause hypoglycaemia
in some people) - tacrolimus - theophylline -
zidovudine (also known as AZT).
There have been a
handful of reports of pregnancies in women taking fluconazole
together with the oral contraceptive pill. It is not known if
these pregnancies were due to the fluconazole making the pill
less effective, but because of this very small risk it may be
advisable to use an additional barrier method of
contraception, eg a condom, while taking a course of
fluconazole.
The anti-blood-clotting effect of
anticoagulants such as nicoumalone and warfarin may be
enhanced by fluconazole. As this may increase the risk of
bleeding, people taking fluconazole with an anticoagulant
should have their bleeding time monitored.
